Ansgar
The territory of North Elbien, as far as the Eider river, was annexed to the Frankish Kingdom in 810. This made the establishment of a permanent church organization possible. A baptismal church was built in the Frankish castle at Hammaburg.
In 831 the Benedictine monk Ansgar was appointed the first Archbishop of the newly established Archbishopric of Hamburg. He built a wooden Cathedral church. This Cathedral was burned down during a viking attack in 845 and Ansgar had to flee the city. The Archbishopric of Hamburg and the diocese of Bremen were united to form the Archbishopric, Bremen-Hamburg. The Cathedral Chapter remained in Hamburg to represent the bishop. It organized, among other things, the building of the Cathedral of St. Mary.
