The Church of St. Mary becomes a Cathedral Church
On the 7th of January 1995, Archbishopric of Hamburg was solemly created and the Parish Church of St. Mary was granted Cathedral Status.
As the church was now a cathedral and the seat of the Archbishop, the facilities were not adequate for all the new demands so, at the beginning of 2007, Archbishop Thissen decided to have the cathedral refurbished and enlarged, including having the sacristy extended. After a renovation period of 16 months, the Cathedral of St. Mary was reopened on 23rd. November 2008.
