The New Church of Our Lady

There were very few Catholics living in Hamburg at the beginning of the 19th century. Due to the industrialization and the enlargement of the harbour, the numbers increased rapidly, particularly in the district of St. Georg.

In 1861 an order of nuns opened an orphanage.. The church was built in a backyard next to the orphanage. The 64 meter high twin church-towers could be seen from afar, but it was not until the houses in front of the church were destroyed during the Second World War that it became possible to have the church square in it's present form.

In 1889 the architect, Arnold Güldenpfennig, was commissioned to design the new church which, in accordance with the wishes of the Bishop of Osnabrück, Bernhard Höting was to be in the New Romanesque style. The new church was consecrated on the 28th of June, 1893 and named the church of St. Mary.

The church of St. Mary was the first catholic church built in Hamburg since the reformation and represented a new awakening of self-assurance among the catholics in the diaspora.
