The old Cathedral of St. Mary

A stone Cathedral was built in the 11th century and this was altered and enlarged many times during the following centuries.

In 1245 the construction of a triple-nave Basilika in an early gothic style began. This church was consecrated in 1329. At the end of the century two naves were added and it was redesigned as a hall church. A tower was added in 1433. This building remained in more or less the same form until the church was taken down in 1806.

In 1522 the reformation had spread to Hamburg. For some time the cathedral remained a catholic enclave under the auspices of different foreign groups.

In 1803, due to the small numbers in the community attached to the cathedral and the cost of its upkeep, the cathedral was secularized and between 1804 until 1807 it was demolished. Valuable treasures and documents were stolen, given away or sold. Very little was left of the rich fittings which can be found elsewhere today.

The only reminders of the old Cathedral are street names in the city; Cathedral Street, Cathedral Place.
